"Pros: The apartment was exceptional especially regarding space, facilities, cleanliness, and of course the great location, not to mention the large veranda overlooking the sea and the harbour! The host was very helpful and made us feel at home! Thanks George for the great experience we had!
Cons: Everything was great! Nothing to add." ~Michalis
"Pros: The Aquila Atlantis Hotel has an established presence in the city. The following things were well received about the Hotel: (1) The breakfast was by far the best part of the hotel - a huge selection. There were a variety of eggs: soft, boiled, poached, scrambled. Many different types of breads and fruits. A good array of yoghurt, muesli and dessert-like options. Most impressively, there was a huge slice of honeycomb on display oozing fresh honey! As for drinks, a waiter offered tea and coffee - he even remembered our order the next day. There was also sparkling wine available too. (2) The hotel was really close to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum which featured some of the fresco paintings from Knossos Palace (3 minute walk) and the Fortress in the Port (13 minute walk). The Port itself is beautiful. Note that entry into the fortress is a few euros. (3) The porter was very helpful - taking our bags on arrival and assisting with storage as we checked-out. Reception assisted with ordering a taxi with the non-tourist price of 15 euros. (4) The bar on the ground floor was immensely long - though we didn't have time to test out the drinks. (5) There were comfy spa gowns available in the room.
Cons: The Aquila Atlantis Hotel could improve as follows: (1) The balcony balustrading blocked out most of the view as it was not transparent - it also had a sizeable gap at the bottom which would be concerning with small children. When we sat in the outdoor chairs, we just saw the balustrade. Higher chairs or a bar table would have been better. (2) The view itself was also disappointing - overlooking a demolished building and the sea view blocked by the two carrier ships. I would have preferred a view of the city or the Fortress down below. This was a real shame as I selected the room because of the view. Other guests' reviews have suggested booking accommodation closer in the city and from the outside, the Megaron Hotel looked like it would have a better outlook. (3) The balcony had constant smoke filtering in from neighbouring guests so we had to close the door to stop it filling our room. (4) There were little amenities for a 5-star hotel. The pool was outdoors and not heated, nor were there any jacuzzies so this was also disappointing. The representative from the spa was often in the foyer advertising the services but this could be more enticing with a refreshing complimentary drink or product to lure you. The specials noted on the printed piece of paper provided could have been displayed better and were still rather expensive. We did not have time to view the gym. (5) At breakfast, there was also no one to greet you or no sign advising what to do - rather, upon enquiring with Reception, I was told to just sit wherever and someone would come over. (6) The shampoo, conditioner and body soap (while environmentally friendly in the squeezy bottle), had a really cheap and masculine scent. They were quite strong & not indicative of 5-star luxury in my view. (7) The TV did not have an option for Netflix and had limited English channels. (8) Finally, when we were staying, there was really loud noise from outside on the road due to upgrading of the optic network." ~Laura
